When it comes to comparing vehicles, most media focus on passenger cars. However, commercial vehicles are often overlooked. According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, sales of commercial vehicles in China exceeded 2.2 million units last year, outpacing the growth of passenger cars. China has become the world's largest market for commercial vehicles. In fact, the Chinese auto industry began with commercial vehicles, and local manufacturers have gained global recognition. Last year, more than half of all exported vehicles came from the commercial vehicle sector, making it a force to be reckoned with.
In the micro-vehicle segment, sales reached about one million units last year. SAIC-GM-Wuling and Changan Star dominated over 70% of the market. The Wuling Light series sold more than 370,000 units, far exceeding the annual sales of models like Jetta and Santana. It's the top-selling Chinese model in terms of volume. The Changan Star series sold around 170,000 units, placing it among the top five in the passenger car segment. Meanwhile, Guangwu Wuling and Changan Micro-Vehicles sold 18,000 and 16,000 units respectively, attracting attention from other automakers.
In June last year, Changan surpassed Wuling for the first time in nearly two years, selling over 37,500 units compared to Wuling’s 35,100. Both the Wuling Light and Changan Star II are priced below 50,000 yuan. The comparison test aimed to include Dongfeng Xiaokang, but due to limited availability, only the Wuling Light and Changan Star II were tested.
**Space and Shape: Changan Star II Takes the Lead**
Unlike passenger cars, mini-vehicles are primarily designed for carrying people or goods. Many consumers assume they will be small in size. However, the Changan Star II, launched last year, is known as the “new space†leader. It uses the MM (Minimum-Maximum) design concept, maximizing internal cargo space while minimizing external dimensions. Its interior cargo space reaches 3.9 cubic meters, the largest in its class.
Visually, the Changan Star II is taller and longer than the Wuling Light. When measuring internal cargo space, it offers nearly 0.7 cubic meters more than the Wuling, giving it a slight edge. The integrated rear door design also improves convenience when loading and unloading. While the Wuling Light features a foldable rear seat that enhances space and visibility, its body width is slightly better, making it appear more balanced.
The Changan Star II also looks fresher compared to the older Wuling Light, which was released in 2002. However, the Wuling Light has an extended version that can compete with the Changan Star II in terms of space.
**Handling: Wuling Light Shines**
Despite their low price range (30,000–50,000 yuan), these micro-vehicles are mainly used for cargo. They lack power steering, leading to heavier steering and less comfort. They also have poor shock absorption, making the ride bumpy. Noise levels are high, with idle noise around 87 decibels, which can be uncomfortable.
However, manufacturers try to optimize comfort by adjusting pedal positions, gear shifters, and steering angles to reduce driver fatigue. The Wuling Light has smoother gears and better acceleration than the Changan Star II. Although the Changan Star II has a lower pedal, the Wuling feels more comfortable during long drives. Additionally, the Wuling’s lighter body weight contributes to better power efficiency and stability.

**Test Drive Reviews**
Besides the physical size, the Wuling Light and Changan Star II are very similar. After years of development, micro-vehicle technology has matured and converged. Both brands have studied each other closely. Choosing between them is tough. If you're a self-employed person looking for a vehicle that can carry people or goods at under 50,000 yuan, the value is undeniable.
One reviewer said, “If I had to choose, I’d go with the Changan Star II. I want more space to pack goods, and it’s more cost-effective.†Another noted, “The Wuling Light handles better, but the Changan offers more space.â€
A third user commented, “Driving a commercial vehicle felt fresh. Their space is impressive, but the ride quality is average. At higher speeds, it feels unstable. I’d advise drivers to slow down for safety.â€
Overall, both models have strong points. Wuling excels in handling, while Changan leads in space. For those who prioritize cargo capacity, the Changan Star II might be the better choice.
