How to follow up the large-scale compressor manufacturers of petrochemical plants

Large-scale petrochemical plants have significantly boosted the production of essential equipment such as pumps, valves, and compressors. As a critical component in the industry, compressors have seen some progress through technology transfer, internalization, and innovation. However, there is still a gap between domestic capabilities and international standards. With the growing trend toward larger petrochemical facilities, how can China's compressor industry bridge this gap and reach global leadership? In recent years, both domestically and globally, petrochemical production has expanded rapidly, leading to a clear trend toward larger compressors. Internationally, atmospheric and vacuum distillation units now operate at 17 million tons per year, catalytic cracking units at 6.5 million tons, continuous reforming units at 2.45 million tons, and hydrocracking units at 3.5 million tons annually. Delayed coking units have reached 6.4 million tons, ethylene cracking units at 1.27 million tons, and polyethylene/polypropylene plants at 500,000 tons per year. Although China’s compressor industry has made progress in breaking foreign market dominance, domestic manufacturers still lag in development capability, manufacturing technology, and management. Approximately 30% of centrifugal compressors and 20% of reciprocating compressors are imported. These imports mainly include high-pressure reciprocating compressors used in large-scale ethylene "triple machines," polypropylene, and polyethylene plants. Screw compressors in olefin extraction and air compressors in PTA plants also face challenges, especially those driven by steam turbines with complex coaxial configurations. Since the 2000s, the scale of domestic refineries has grown from 2.5–5 million tons/year to 8–10 million tons/year, while ethylene plants have expanded from 110,000–300,000 tons/year to 800,000–1 million tons/year. The largest petrochemical centrifugal compressor currently in use in China is the crack gas compressor in Shanghai Seker’s 900,000-ton ethylene plant, featuring an inlet flow of 260,000 Nm³/h, outlet pressure of 3.89 MPa, and a shaft power of 45,000 kW. The largest reciprocating compressor is an ultra-high-pressure unit in a 200,000-ton/year high-pressure polyethylene plant, with a mass flow of 85,000 kg/h and an outlet pressure of 310 MPa, powered by a synchronous motor with 16,500 kW of power. R&D efforts are shifting toward improving reliability, efficiency, and energy savings. Advances like three-dimensional flow theory have enhanced impeller blade design, boosting compressor efficiency beyond 88%. Modern control systems ensure stable operation for over three years without shutdown. Simulation software helps predict performance under real conditions, increasing new product success rates. Electromechanical integration enables automated monitoring, optimization, and protection. Reciprocating compressors are widely used in oil refining, ethylene, and fertilizer industries, with piston loads exceeding 1,250 kN and shaft power over 10,000 kW. They are moving toward higher capacity, pressure, compactness, lower noise, and better environmental performance. Screw compressors are popular due to their small size and ease of maintenance, but they remain largely imported due to high flow, pressure, and power requirements. For example, a butadiene screw compressor in an ethylene plant operates at 5,777 m³/h, 0.7 MPa, and 590 kW, while a regenerated gas compressor in a polyethylene plant runs at 1,678 m³/h and 400 kW. Globally, screw compressor technology is evolving rapidly, with new tooth profiles enhancing efficiency and structural innovations improving performance. Microprocessor-based controls enable automatic monitoring and integration, making these systems more intelligent and efficient.
