700,000 tons/year of flue gas sulfuric acid plant
Recently, the Gansu Jinchuan Group has made significant progress with the completion of its 104-meter-high steel chimney and 12 sulfuric acid storage tanks each with a capacity of 3,500 cubic meters. This marks the gradual realization of the company’s 700,000 tons/year sulfuric acid plant, which is now becoming a reality. This facility stands as the world's largest single-series flue gas acid plant, showcasing Jinchuan’s commitment to environmental protection and industrial advancement.
The project is an essential part of the environmental protection system supporting the company’s new nickel smelting process. It is designed to treat flue gas from the oxygen-enriched top-blowing smelting furnace, two 110-ton blowing converters, and a depleted furnace. By capturing and processing these emissions, the plant significantly reduces sulfur dioxide pollution, contributing to cleaner air and sustainable development.
Jinchuan’s new oxygen-enriched top-blowing nickel smelting project is currently the largest of its kind globally and serves as a key initiative under the company’s “Eleventh Five-Year Plan.†With a total investment of 2.23 billion yuan, the project started in September 2006. Alongside it, the sulfuric acid production project was launched simultaneously, emphasizing the integration of environmental protection with industrial growth.
The sulfuric acid plant includes critical components such as gas purification, conversion, dry absorption, and acid storage. Drawing on the experience from the company’s existing 530,000 tons/year sulfuric acid plant, the design incorporates advanced technology and high-quality materials. The project is expected to cost 350 million yuan and be completed by June 2008.
Once operational, the plant will process 283,000 standard cubic meters of sulfur dioxide gas per hour, recover 450,000 tons of sulfur dioxide annually, and produce 700,000 tons of sulfuric acid. This will be the sixth time Jinchuan successfully captures sulfur dioxide and converts it into sulfuric acid, reinforcing its leadership in green technology.
The project is crucial for reducing sulfur dioxide emissions in Jinchang city, improving local air quality, and supporting the company’s expansion plans. It represents a major step forward in balancing industrial development with environmental responsibility.
