700,000 tons/year of flue gas sulfuric acid plant
Recently, with the completion of the 104-meter-high steel structure chimney and 12 sulfuric acid storage tanks each with a capacity of 3,500 cubic meters, Gansu Jinchuan Group's 700,000 tons/year sulfuric acid plant is now taking shape. This facility stands as the world’s largest single-unit flue gas acid production plant, marking a significant milestone in environmental protection and industrial development.
The project is part of an environmental initiative tied to Jinchuan Group’s new nickel smelting system. It is designed to process flue gas from the oxygen-enriched top-blowing smelting furnace, two 110-ton converters, and a depleted furnace. This integration ensures efficient and environmentally responsible processing of emissions, enhancing the company’s sustainability efforts.
Jinchuan Group’s new oxygen-enriched top-blowing nickel smelting project is currently the largest of its kind globally and a key component of the company’s “Eleventh Five-Year Plan.†With a total investment of 2.23 billion yuan, the project started in September 2006. Alongside it, the 700,000 tons/year sulfuric acid construction project was launched as a critical environmental support system. The sulfuric acid plant includes key stages such as gas purification, conversion, dry absorption, and acid storage.
Drawing on the experience from the company’s existing 530,000 tons/year sulfuric acid plant, the design incorporates advanced technologies and high-quality materials, ensuring efficiency and reliability. The project is expected to cost 350 million yuan and be completed by June 2008. Once operational, it will process 283,000 standard cubic meters of sulfur dioxide gas per hour, recover 450,000 tons of sulfur dioxide annually, and produce 700,000 tons of sulfuric acid.
This will be the sixth time that Jinchuan Group has implemented sulfur dioxide recovery and sulfuric acid production, further solidifying its leadership in green technology. The project is expected to significantly reduce sulfur dioxide emissions in Jinchang City, improve air quality, and support the company’s long-term growth and expansion.
