Historic Chicago fire photos

This is from Eric Haak: This week, I wanted to share four different fire incidents captured in images. The first one is a 5-11 alarm at 29th and LaSalle Streets on August 26, 1959. The building was scheduled for demolition to make way for the Dan Ryan Expressway. These kinds of fires were more common back then, especially in older parts of the city where structures were being replaced by modern infrastructure. ![A 5-11 Alarm fire at 29th and LaSalle Streets on 8/26/59](https://example.com/image1.jpg) *A 5-11 at 29th and LaSalle Streets on 8/26/59. It's interesting to see that this was a pillow manufacturer. Fires at industrial sites like these often had unique challenges, and it's fascinating to look back at how crews handled them with the equipment they had at the time. ![5-11 +1 Special at 3616 S. Clark on November 14, 1964, which was part of the infamous 72-Hour Alarm. That event was a major challenge for the fire department and highlighted the need for better coordination during large-scale emergencies. ![5-11 Alarm fire at 1816 S. State on August 2, 1966. These types of fires are rare today due to improved building codes and safety measures. It was definitely a different era—both in terms of how buildings were constructed and how firefighters responded to emergencies. ![3-11 Alarm fire at 4201 S.
