3-Alarm fatal fire in Bensenville, 11-19-17 (part 8)
I was called to this incident a week ago. It started as a fire alarm and escalated to a full response before the fire department arrived. There was one civilian fatality, likely from the fire in the apartment. When I got there, the fire was already in the attic and spreading quickly. Water supply was an issue because the area has small mains. The smoke conditions were incredible—very dynamic and constantly changing. From a "fire fan" perspective, it was especially interesting because it marked the first use of the brand new Bensenville rearmount E-ONE quint and the debut of Chicago FD Squad 7’s Snorkel. Squad 7 is based at Rescue Station 3 at O’Hare and covers the northwest side of the city, including some MABAS alarms in the suburbs. Their rig is the only one of the four squad sets that's lime green and doesn’t often see active fire duty where an elevated master stream is needed. This call really put the unit to the test. I’ve included a few of my favorite photos, and I encourage you to check out the video and all the images here:
