This message comes from Eric Haak: This week, I’m sharing some historical photos from a 5-11 alarm fire that took place on January 28, 1965. The incident occurred at an abandoned grain mill located at 2203-09 South Lumber Street. For those familiar with the area, this site is now home to Ozinga Concrete, just south of Cermak Road along the Chicago River. The second image features Engine 8, and the last one shows Engine 23. In the fourth photo, I can count 13 master streams in operation. The time was reported as 4:47 p.m. I hope you enjoy these rare glimpses into Chicago’s firefighting history. 5-11 alarm fire in Chicago on January 28, 1965.
