Vintage 5-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 1-28-65

This message comes from Eric Haak:

This week, I’m sharing some historical photos from a 5-11 alarm fire that took place on January 28, 1965. The incident occurred at an abandoned grain mill located at 2203-09 South Lumber Street. For those familiar with the area, this site is now home to Ozinga Concrete, just south of Cermak Road along the Chicago River. The second image features Engine 8, and the last one shows Engine 23. In the fourth photo, I can count 13 master streams in operation. The time was reported as 4:47 p.m. I hope you enjoy these rare glimpses into Chicago’s firefighting history.

These images offer a powerful reminder of the challenges firefighters faced in the past, especially during large-scale fires. It's fascinating to see how many resources were deployed—like the 13 master streams in the fourth photo—and how the city has changed over the decades. If you're interested in local history or firefighting, these photos are a valuable resource. Let me know if you'd like more details about any of the locations or equipment shown.
