ZF Hybrid Power System has been put into use in Suzhou

May 17, 2012, at the ZF Technical Exchange Conference on Road Transport Exhibition, Liao Liheng, General Manager of ZF Drive Technology (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. revealed that the Haegah passenger car equipped with the ZF hybrid Eolife transmission has been in transit in Suzhou. Put into operation more than a month. The vehicles were in good condition and the data exceeded ZF’s previous expectations, but the specific figures for fuel saving were not announced.

The demand for hybrid technologies that can effectively achieve fuel economy is increasing, especially for urban passenger cars, which will benefit more from hybrid technology. ZF has met this need by expanding the scope of delivery of the driveline. Therefore ZF will provide hybrid systems in addition to manual transmissions and automatic transmissions. This system is a parallel hybrid system based on the combination of an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. This form can use existing resources in the most economical way. ZF will provide a full range of hybrid systems, including hybrid transmissions with integrated motors, control units and lithium-ion batteries.

The parallel hybrid system solution is very flexible and it can be used for medium-mixed or severe hybrid systems. The parallel hybrid system can realize all the functions of the hybrid system: engine idle stop, braking energy recovery, vehicle acceleration assistance, pure electric start and pure electric driving. In this way, a heavily parallel hybrid system can save more than 30% in urban operating conditions. These advantages will become more and more important in the near future. For example, when some laws and regulations will limit the use of internal combustion engines in urban areas, this advantage will be fully reflected.

Hybrid based on existing transmission system

A big advantage for OEMs already using ZF transmissions is that all hybrid systems provided by ZF are parallel hybrid systems based on existing transmission systems, similar to manual transmissions or automatic transmissions. It is easy to meet the requirements of vehicle installation.

These advantages are fully reflected in HyTronic hybrid systems based on ASTroniclite transmissions. The entire hybrid system includes: automatic transmission, 60kW motor, inverter, power battery, wiring harness and battery management system. Therefore, the hybrid system has all the functions of a heavy parallel hybrid system, including: engine idle stop, brake energy recovery, vehicle acceleration assist, pure electric start and pure electric driving. Although the weight of the power battery, wiring harness and cooling system is increased after the vehicle uses the hybrid system, the reduction in the total weight of the vehicle is eliminated by reducing the specification of the internal combustion engine and eliminating the 24V battery and the starter motor.

High integration makes the system simple

Not only is every part of the hybrid system, integrating and optimizing the hybrid control system is a very important task. With the addition of motors, many new features and strategies can be realized: When to work in pure electricity mode? When does the motor-assisted internal combustion engine accelerate? When the vehicle is running on pure electricity, what gear is used in the transmission to enable the engine to work at an economical speed range just after intervention? ZF supports the entire vehicle plant by providing and integrating all the components required for the hybrid system and achieves effective system integration. In addition to providing hybrid transmissions and motors, ZF can also provide hybrid control systems HyControl and lithium-ion battery HyStorage. The battery rated output power 60kW, 2kWh. The battery can also be used in series to obtain twice the power output. The hybrid control system is equipped with an inverter that can convert the high voltage power of the power battery into low voltage according to the needs of the vehicle. ZF also provides software to control the energy storage system and optimize shifting strategies.

Ecolife-based hybrid system

ZF has developed its hybrid version based on the 6-speed automatic hydraulic transmission Ecolife. The hybrid module was integrated in the torque converter housing and replaced the original torque converter, resulting in a total installed size that was essentially the same as the original Ecolife transmission. The motor in the hybrid module can provide an additional 120 kW of power. The hybrid system also has all the features of a heavily parallel hybrid system, including: engine idle stop, brake energy recovery, vehicle acceleration assist, pure electric start and pure electric driving. ZF has already completed the main system integration work of this hybrid system, especially hybrid drive control and energy management. ZF is working hard for the mass production of this product.
