Dongfeng Cummins Clean Power joins hands with Beijing Olympics
A few days ago, the second light company's square in Beijing was bustling with activity as the Beijing Sanitation Group Co., Ltd. unveiled 30 brand-new Dongfeng "Tianjin" medium and heavy trucks. These vehicles became the highlight of the event, as the Dongfeng Tianjin Launch Conference took place there. On the same day, the first batch of 300 Dongfeng Tianjin trucks was delivered to the Beijing Environmental Sanitation Engineering Group Co., Ltd. Each of these vehicles is equipped with advanced Dongfeng Cummins ISDe series III and IV electronically controlled engines, and they will be responsible for waste collection and transportation at the Olympic venues.
The event was attended by leaders from several key organizations, including Dongfeng Cummins Engine Company, Cummins Inc. from the U.S., Dongfeng Motor Group, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Company, Beijing Sanitation Group, and the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau. Liu Xiaoxing, General Manager of Dongfeng Cummins Engine Co., Ltd., emphasized that this batch of Dongfeng Tianjin vehicles marks a significant step forward in the company’s mission of “Clean Power, Serving China,†directly supporting the environmental goals of the upcoming “Green Olympics.â€
Beijing’s bid for the Olympic Games included a commitment to a safe and reliable municipal waste disposal system, which is a crucial part of the Green Olympics initiative. Ensuring the safety, environmental friendliness, and efficiency of solid waste management is essential for the success of the event. The Beijing Sanitation Group highlighted this purchase as a key measure to enhance the image of sanitation vehicles and as a practical response to the national “Green Olympics†strategy.
These Dongfeng Tianjin sanitation vehicles will be deployed at Olympic venues, performing garbage collection and transport tasks while also shuttling between major stadiums. Their engine emissions are a top priority, as maintaining clean air is vital for both athletes and spectators. Additionally, the engines must be stable, reliable, and have a low failure rate to ensure smooth operations. In the context of rising fuel prices and a growing emphasis on sustainability, improving the fuel efficiency of sanitation vehicles has become a major concern for the Beijing Sanitation Group.
The Dongfeng Tianjin is powered by the globally recognized Cummins ISDe4 and 6-cylinder electronically controlled engines, developed specifically for the Chinese market. Based on the U.S. Cummins European IV platform, these engines can be upgraded to Euro V standards with minimal modifications, making them a future-ready solution. The design also offers greater reliability, as the engine components are 20% fewer than similar products, reducing the likelihood of breakdowns. This not only ensures safer driving but also provides a more comfortable environment for drivers.
Moreover, the compact design saves space and enhances vehicle compatibility. In terms of cost-effectiveness, the mature electronic control technology allows for more efficient combustion, resulting in better fuel economy. As production increases, the cost of the engine has also dropped significantly, offering better value to customers.
In addition, the head of the Beijing Sanitation Group noted that while the State III electronic control engines are becoming more common in China, many drivers still lack the knowledge to operate them effectively. As a joint venture between Cummins and Dongfeng, Dongfeng Cummins provides not only advanced technology but also comprehensive support, including vehicle matching solutions and after-sales service. They also offer expert consultations to help users adapt to new technologies and reduce the challenges of adopting modern systems.
The Green Olympics relies heavily on the efforts of sanitation workers and the infrastructure that supports them. In October 2007, Dongfeng Cummins Engine Co., Ltd. and Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Co., Ltd. held a sanitation vehicle promotion conference in Xiangfan, Hubei. The delivery of the Dongfeng Tianjin to the Beijing Sanitation Group marked the official entry of Dongfeng Cummins’ next-generation electronically controlled engines into the Beijing sanitation market. This milestone signifies the start of a journey to support the Green Olympics and reflects the deepening collaboration between Dongfeng Cummins and its largest customer, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles, in the development of the special vehicle market.
