13 Chemical Technology Projects Tackling Problems

This year's national 973 Plan is fully prepared for basic research. According to the Basic Research Department of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Key Basic Research and Development Program — the 973 Plan — was officially launched on October 10, 2006, in Beijing. During the conference, 65 projects were announced, selected by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China for the 973 Program. Among these, 13 projects are related to the petroleum and chemical industries. The 65 projects cover a wide range of fields, including agriculture, energy, information technology, resources and environment, population and health, materials science, interdisciplinary research, and cutting-edge scientific frontiers. The petroleum and chemical projects focus on foundational research, such as the hydrocarbon accumulation mechanism and distribution patterns in typical superimposed basins in western China. Other key areas include the study of carbonate fracture-cavity reservoirs, the green and efficient utilization of oil resources, and the development of advanced materials for short-process manufacturing. Additionally, the program includes research on high-performance polyacrylonitrile (PAN) carbon fibers, biosafety of artificial nanomaterials, enhanced oil recovery using greenhouse gases, and fundamental issues in material creation and chemical transformation. It also covers molecular electronics, protein machines, energy-saving technologies for industrial heat exchange equipment, thermoelectric conversion materials, and molecular self-assembly and its functional applications. These projects are expected to play a significant role in shaping the future of the petroleum and chemical industries, driving innovation, and addressing critical challenges. The National 973 Plan has been a cornerstone of China's basic research strategy since its launch in 1998. Each project receives funding ranging from 5 million to 30 million yuan, supporting groundbreaking scientific exploration and technological advancement. The event was hosted by the Ministry of Science and Technology, with Deputy Minister Cheng Jinpei personally appointing the chief scientists for each project. This initiative highlights the government's strong commitment to fostering long-term scientific progress and maintaining China's position at the forefront of global research.
