13 Chemical Technology Projects Tackling Problems
This year's national 973 Plan has been officially launched, marking a significant step forward in China's commitment to basic scientific research. According to the Basic Research Department of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the 2006 session of the National Key Basic Research and Development Program—commonly known as the 973 Plan—was held on October 10 in Beijing. During the event, 65 projects were officially announced, with 13 of them focusing on the petroleum and chemical industries.
These 65 projects span a wide range of fields, including agriculture, energy, information technology, resources and environment, population and health, materials science, interdisciplinary studies, and key scientific frontiers. Among the 13 petroleum and chemical-related projects, notable areas include the study of hydrocarbon accumulation mechanisms in western China’s superimposed basins, the development of carbonate fracture-cavity reservoirs, green chemistry for efficient oil resource utilization, and research on the biosafety of artificial nanomaterials. Other topics cover advanced thermoelectric conversion materials, molecular electronics, and the fundamental principles of protein machines.
The implementation of these projects is expected to play a crucial role in advancing basic research within the petroleum and chemical sectors, while also addressing key challenges that will shape the industry's future. The 973 Plan, initiated in 1998, is designed to support long-term, strategic scientific goals that drive national technological progress. Each project typically receives funding between 5 million and 30 million yuan, reflecting the government's strong investment in foundational science.
The conference was hosted by the Ministry of Science and Technology, where Deputy Minister Cheng Jinpei formally appointed the chief scientists for each of the selected projects. This event highlights the importance of coordinated, large-scale scientific efforts in maintaining China’s competitive edge in global research and innovation. Since its inception, the 973 Plan has contributed to numerous breakthroughs, significantly elevating the quality and international standing of China’s basic research.
