Top best selling cars in Portugal

The year 2021 marked a significant shift in the Portuguese automotive landscape, as Renault ceded its long-held dominance in the national car market. Not only did the French automaker lose its crown as the best-selling car brand, but its iconic model, the Renault Clio, also relinquished its eight-year reign as the most beloved car in Portugal. Peugeot stepped into the spotlight, surpassing Renault to become the leading car brand in the country, ending Renault's 23-year reign. This change wasn't limited to brands alone; the models that captured the hearts of Portuguese drivers also evolved. Peugeot's compact crossover, the 2008, emerged victorious, claiming the top spot as the best-selling vehicle in Portugal. It surged from third place in 2020 to first, with a remarkable 34% increase in sales compared to the previous year. A total of 6,404 units of the Peugeot 2008 were sold in 2021, solidifying its status as a fan favorite. Peugeot's rise didn't stop there. The 208 also climbed the ranks, moving up one position to fourth place. This model achieved a sales increase of 23.9% in 2021, selling 4,834 units. Meanwhile, Renault's Captur, a compact SUV, managed to climb one spot to secure third place, with 5,017 units sold, representing an 18.6% increase from the prior year. Even though the Renault Clio fell to second place, it remained a strong contender, with 5,601 units sold—a 29.9% drop from its peak in 2020. Despite the decline, the Clio maintained its reputation as a reliable choice among Portuguese drivers. Other notable mentions include the Dacia Sandero, which experienced a 44.3% growth in sales, selling 3,501 units, and the Citroën C3, which held steady at sixth place with 3,520 units sold, marking a 4.7% increase year-over-year. Looking further down the list, the BMW 1 Series debuted in eighth place, followed by the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, which dropped significantly to fifth place after holding second place the previous year. The Toyota Yaris made a surprising entrance at ninth place, with a 36.4% growth in sales compared to 2020. As the automotive market continues to evolve, these shifts highlight how consumer preferences can dramatically alter the competitive dynamics within the industry. For 2021, Peugeot's triumphs underscore its growing influence in the Portuguese market, signaling a new era for both brands and consumers alike.
