Herbert “Herbie†Johnson gathered to honor him on the anniversary of his passing this Saturday. Johnson lost his life after suffering severe burns while fighting an extra-alarm fire at a home in the 2300 block of West 50th Place on November 2, 2012. His wife, Susan Johnson, received a memorial bronze fire helmet from her husband’s colleagues at Engine 123, where he was stationed. The station is also home to Tower Ladder 39, located at 2217 W. 51st Street, where his brother, Firefighter Teddy Johnson, still works. As part of the ceremony, which included a firebell ringing in Capt. Johnson’s honor, a memorial was unveiled. It features a bronze fire helmet, a photo of Johnson, and a plaque commemorating his service, particularly his work in New York City following the September 11, 2001 attacks. Thanks, Dan.
