Herbert “Herbie†Johnson were among those who honored him on the anniversary of his death Saturday. Johnson passed away after suffering severe burns while fighting an extra-alarm fire at a home in the 2300 block of West 50th Place on Nov. 2, 2012. His wife, Susan Johnson, received a memorial bronze fire helmet from her husband’s colleagues at Engine 123, Tower Ladder 39, located at 2217 W. 51st Street, where his brother, Firefighter Teddy Johnson, still works. As part of the ceremony, which included a firebell ringing in Capt. Johnson’s honor, a memorial was unveiled featuring a bronze fire helmet, a photo of Johnson, and a plaque commemorating his service in New York City following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.
