Interdivisional industrial fire in Morris, 6-29-21

Excerpts from Chicago.cbslocal.com:

Emergency responders are still on the scene in Morris, Illinois, working to contain a large industrial fire involving lithium-ion batteries. The incident, which began on Tuesday, has led to a mandatory evacuation for residents in parts of the city.

The fire broke out at around 11:42 a.m. at the old Federal Paper Board building on East Benton Street, which was being used as a storage facility for a significant number of lithium batteries. According to Superior Battery, the company currently operating at the site, there were approximately 80 to 100 tons of batteries stored there.

Due to the hazardous nature of lithium battery fires—producing toxic smoke and particulates—authorities ordered an immediate evacuation of the southeast side of Morris. The affected area spans from Washington Street eastward to Evergreen Cemetery, westward to Route 47, and southward to the river, with the railroad tracks marking the northern boundary.

Because lithium reacts violently when exposed to water, firefighters are unable to use traditional methods to extinguish the flames. Instead, they are focusing on containing the fire and preventing it from spreading. The fire department confirmed that the best course of action is to let the fire burn while maintaining a safe perimeter.

"The building is performing well and keeping the explosions contained inside," said Chief Tracey Steffes of the Morris Fire Department. "There’s no risk of explosions outside the structure."

Over 130 firefighters and 30 units were deployed to the scene. In addition, the Illinois National Guard has been called in to assist with monitoring air quality and environmental conditions. A team of 12 service members, along with five trucks and three trailers equipped with chemical assessment tools, is en route from Bartonville. Their mission is to help determine when it will be safe for residents to return home.

The American Red Cross has also arrived to support emergency personnel, providing food and water to more than 300 first responders. As the situation continues to unfold, officials are urging residents to stay informed and follow all safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
