CFD Still & Box Alarm on Irving Park Road 4-11-11

This afternoon, Chicago responded to a commercial structure fire at 2543 W. Irving Park Road, located just west of Western Avenue. The building, formerly home to Illinois Battery Mfg., was fully engulfed, sending thick plumes of black smoke billowing high into the sky, visible from miles away. Fortunately, the first-floor commercial space was unoccupied, but the second-floor apartment was inhabited. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported. However, due to concerns about potential hazardous materials inside the structure, a Level I Haz Mat response was initiated. Tower Ladder 21 and Squad 2’s Snorkel were equipped with elevated master streams to combat the intense flames. A special request was made for Tower Ladder 23, though it remained on standby in Sector 3. Tim Olk, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro were on the scene shortly after the fire had been significantly contained. Tim has shared a gallery [here](link), Steve has a collection [here](link), and Larry’s photos can be found [here](link). I took a few moments to capture some images that tell the story of how firefighters worked tirelessly to control the blaze. In one shot, you can see firefighters on the lower roof attempting to access the fire above the second-floor apartment (photo credit: Tim Olk). Another image shows a firefighter scaling the roof to assist his team in targeting the visible flames (Larry Shapiro). From Squad 2’s Snorkel, firefighters worked diligently to gain access and ventilate the second floor (Tim Olk again). Meanwhile, Tower Ladder 23 stood ready in Sector 3 but was ultimately not needed (Larry Shapiro). Further shots highlight Engine 56, one of the four engines working at the scene (Larry Shapiro). Tower Ladder 21 and Squad 2 collaborated from above to douse the flames effectively (Steve Redick). Inside the chaos, firefighters navigated through thick smoke to ensure all areas were secure and extinguished (Tim Olk). One particularly striking image captures a firefighter momentarily catching his breath as water rained down from above (Larry Shapiro). Across the street, the intensity of the situation is evident, with Squad 2 and Tower Ladder 21 actively engaged in Sector 1 (Steve Redick). The dedication and teamwork of these firefighters were inspiring, especially when faced with such challenging conditions. Steve even managed to capture a short video showing the firefighting efforts in action. It’s a reminder of the risks they take every day to protect our communities.
