CFD Still & Box Alarm on Irving Park Road 4-11-11

This afternoon, Chicago responded to a commercial structure fire at 2543 W. Irving Park Road, located just west of Western Avenue. The blaze originated at the former site of Illinois Battery Mfg., sending thick plumes of black smoke billowing high into the sky, visible for miles around. Fortunately, the first-floor commercial space was vacant, but the second-floor apartment was occupied. According to the Chicago Tribune, there were no reported injuries. A Level I Haz Mat response was initiated due to concerns about the unknown contents inside the building. When the firefighters arrived, Tower Ladder 21 and Squad 2's Snorkel were already deploying their elevated master streams to tackle the flames. Interestingly, Tower Ladder 23 was placed on standby in Sector 3 but was ultimately not needed. Tim Olk, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro were on-site shortly after the fire had been largely contained. Tim has shared a gallery of images HERE, Steve has another HERE, and Larry's photos can be found HERE. One of the most striking moments during the firefighting efforts was when firefighters worked on the lower roof to access the fire raging above the second-floor apartment. In another image, a firefighter ascends the roof to assist his team in dousing the visible fire. Inside, firefighters from Squad 2 used their Snorkel to gain access and ventilate the second floor. Engine 56 was among the four engines deployed to the scene, and Tower Ladder 21, along with Squad 2, worked collaboratively from above to suppress the flames. From across the street, you can see Squad 2 and other firefighters in Sector 1 as smoke poured out of the second floor. In one particularly intense moment, a firefighter from Squad 2 was seen working in a second-floor window with limited visibility, supported by his colleagues. Another photo captures a firefighter catching his breath as water cascaded down from above. Throughout the operation, firefighters remained immersed in dense smoke, their determination evident as they worked tirelessly to control the situation. Steve also recorded a short video capturing some of these dramatic moments. It's clear that this fire presented significant challenges, but thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Chicago Fire Department, the situation was managed effectively without any major incidents or injuries. For those interested in more details, additional images and videos continue to surface online, providing further insight into the intensity of the firefighting operations today.
