New fire chief in Carol Stream
In a recent decision, the Carol Stream Fire Protection District board unanimously voted to appoint Deputy Chief Bob Hoff as the new chief, effective immediately. This move comes after a thorough evaluation process where Hoff emerged as the preferred candidate over Perry Johnson, a respected figure within the department who has served for 38 years. Trustees are now anticipated to finalize the contract during their meeting on July 11, which is expected to span approximately three years. Details such as Hoff's salary and specific terms are still being discussed internally.
Hoff, who joined Carol Stream in 2012 following a distinguished career leading the nation's second-largest fire department, brings extensive experience to his new role. Initially, he had taken a step back to focus more on family life, but an opportunity arose to work alongside his long-time colleague and mentor, former Chief Rick Kolomay. Hoff expressed his excitement about continuing the high standards set by his predecessor: "The pride and professionalism this team embodies remind me so much of my previous work in the city. Firefighting isn't just my profession—it's my passion."
Interestingly, firefighting runs deep in Hoff's family. He proudly mentioned having four generations of firefighters in his lineage, including his son. A framed photograph of his late father, a respected Chicago Fire Department battalion chief, serves as a constant source of inspiration. Hoff recalled the poignant words beneath the photo: "To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die." His father tragically lost his life while fighting a blaze in 1962, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to drive Hoff's commitment to the service.
Currently, Hoff and Perry Johnson have been jointly managing the district's daily operations since Chief Kolomay underwent shoulder surgery and transitioned into retirement. During this period, both men have played crucial roles in negotiations with the firefighters' union. Upcoming discussions with a federal mediator will address key issues such as pay adjustments, aiming to align firefighter compensation with neighboring departments. Hoff emphasized that fairness and mutual respect guide these talks, ensuring alignment with industry benchmarks.
As the community anticipates Hoff's leadership, there's optimism about maintaining continuity while fostering innovation. Hoff's appointment marks a significant milestone for the Carol Stream Fire Protection District, signaling a promising future under his guidance.
