New fire chief in Carol Stream

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com: Last Monday night, the Carol Stream Fire Protection District board made the decision to promote Deputy Chief Bob Hoff to the highest-ranking position. According to sources, trustees are anticipated to ratify a contract with Hoff during their meeting scheduled for July 11. While the specifics are still being discussed, the contract is likely to span three years, with details such as Hoff's compensation yet to be finalized. Hoff will now lead a division comprising three fire stations and approximately 60 sworn personnel. His journey began in Carol Stream back in 2012, shortly after he resigned from his role as the leader of the second-largest fire department in the country. At the time, Hoff sought a slower pace of life to spend more time with his family. However, he accepted an offer to join as deputy chief under his long-time colleague, former Chief Rick Kolomay. "I’m thrilled to take on this new role," Hoff remarked following the announcement. "This team already operates at a high standard, and I'm committed to maintaining that level of excellence. The dedication and professionalism displayed by everyone here mirrors what I experienced during my time in the city. For me, firefighting isn't just a career—it’s everything except my family." Hoff comes from a firefighting legacy; his family includes four generations of firefighters, including his son. A framed photo of his late father, a battalion chief for the Chicago Fire Department who lost his life in a blaze on Valentine’s Day 1962, occupies pride of place in his office. Hoff was only five years old when tragedy struck, but the memory of his father continues to inspire him. Beneath the image, a poignant quote reads: "To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die." The competition for the top post was stiff, with Perry Johnson, a 38-year veteran of the district, emerging as the other finalist. Prior to Hoff's appointment, Johnson served as deputy chief but transitioned into a newly created civilian role as chief administrative officer. Since former Chief Kolomay underwent shoulder surgery last year, both Hoff and Johnson have been jointly managing daily operations. Kolomay officially retired on June 1. In addition to their operational responsibilities, Hoff and Johnson have been part of the district's negotiating team involved in ongoing discussions with the firefighters' union. A federal mediator is expected to facilitate further talks later this month. One of the key topics under discussion is pay adjustments, with Hoff indicating that they are exploring ways to align firefighter salaries with those of neighboring departments. Thanks to Dan and Dennis for the heads-up! This update reflects the latest developments while providing deeper insight into Hoff's background and the broader context surrounding the leadership transition.
