National Park Service and Autodesk Carry Out First Comprehensive Digital Survey to Preserve the USS Arizona and Memorial
**Public Company Information:**
NASDAQ: ADSK
**HONOLULU – (BUSINESS WIRE)** – In recognition of U.S. military veterans, the National Park Service (NPS) and Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADSK) organized a press conference today to reveal preliminary outcomes from the first extensive survey of the USS **Arizona** and its accompanying Memorial in three decades. The survey has yielded detailed 3D models, which serve dual purposes of historic preservation and public education. Set to be finalized later this year, the project aims to offer the public a deeper understanding of this significant historical site while contributing to the ship's ongoing conservation.
At the Memorial Day press conference, a 3D-printed replica of the USS **Arizona** was showcased, featuring intricate details never seen before in two-dimensional form. Additionally, highly detailed 3D models of a galley cooking pot and a Coke bottle, which have remained undisturbed on the ship for 72 years, were created and displayed. These models included color nuances and even the barnacles now attached to the cooking pot. Both Autodesk and the NPS aspire to complete a comprehensive 3D model of the entire USS **Arizona** by the end of the year.
“This innovative approach breathes new life into the legacy of the USS **Arizona**, something that simply wasn't possible before,†remarked National Park Service Superintendent Paul DePrey. “As custodians of this sacred site, the NPS is committed to sharing the story of December 7 with present and future generations. These 3D models allow people to experience these historically accurate replicas firsthand, enhancing our educational outreach significantly.â€
Among those in attendance was 92-year-old Don Stratton, a survivor of the USS **Arizona** and one of only nine remaining survivors from that tragic day. Stratton, who was just 19 at the time of the attack, recounted how he and six others managed to traverse a burning rope across the deck to safety aboard the USS **Vestal**. Stratton endured severe burns covering 70% of his body during the harrowing escape.
When shown the 3D-printed model of the cooking pot for the first time, Stratton expressed amazement. “It’s incredible. I don’t know anyone from the galley who made it out that day. Initially, it was about survival, but returning afterward was incredibly difficult. Now, revisiting those memories feels easier. I truly believe these 3D artifacts will leave a lasting impression on many people.â€
His son, Randy Stratton, echoed similar sentiments, stating, “These artifacts cannot be replicated. They symbolize the start and end of the war and remind us of the enduring presence of the USS **Arizona**.â€
Concluding his remarks, Don Stratton emphasized, “I hope everyone remembers all those who remain onboard the **Arizona**. And I hope they never forget the sacrifices made by countless individuals for this nation.â€
Approximately 900 of the 1,777 officers, sailors, and Marines who perished aboard the USS **Arizona** still rest within the ship. Thus, any efforts to work on the vessel must be carried out with utmost respect and care. Keeping this in mind, the NPS is spearheading the creation of an extraordinarily precise, 3D digital representation of the ship, minimizing any physical interference. The NPS is utilizing Autodesk’s reality computing technology, including underwater photogrammetry, subsea LiDAR, high-resolution SONAR, and above-water laser scanning to conduct thorough investigations and analyses without disturbing the ship.
“The USS **Arizona** Memorial is both a vital and delicate part of history,†noted Brian Mathews, Vice President of Autodesk. “Reality Computing is a growing concept bridging the physical and digital realms, and we at Autodesk see immense potential in supporting the National Park Service and preservationists worldwide with this technology to preserve and narrate these stories for future generations.â€
Participating organizations in this survey include HDR, Sam Hirota, Inc., Oceanic Imaging Consultants, Inc., 3DatDepth, Shark Marine Technologies, Inc., the United States Coast Guard, and the US Navy Mobile Diving Salvage Unit One.
