Making an Impact: The Relief Efforts in Nepal
**A Heartfelt Response to the Crisis in Kathmandu**
By Joe Speicher, Executive Director, Autodesk Foundation
This month's tragedy in Kathmandu has left many of us stunned by the scale of destruction and loss. Yet, amidst the devastation, there's been a wave of global solidarity that's truly inspiring. The U.S. government has pledged $10 million in aid, telecom providers are offering free calls to Nepal, and the U.S. Air Force has dispatched over 100 personnel, including specialized urban search-and-rescue teams, to assist in the recovery efforts.
As an organization deeply invested in using technology for positive change, the Autodesk Foundation is actively exploring ways to contribute meaningfully. Tech companies are channeling their resources into leveraging their unique skill sets. Google and Facebook are mobilizing their vast user bases to help confirm the safety of individuals in Nepal. Meanwhile, PayPal, with its massive network of over 150 million active users, is underwriting costs and streamlining donations through their platform.
At the Autodesk Foundation, we believe that our expertise in design and architecture can play a crucial role in Kathmandu’s reconstruction. This is why we’re focusing on organizations aligned with our mission. One standout example is Build Change, a nonprofit partner with over a decade of experience in disaster-stricken regions. They work alongside local governments to establish seismic-safe building codes and train local contractors to implement these practices affordably. Just one day after the earthquake, we learned that Build Change was assembling a response team for Nepal. We urge anyone who believes in the power of thoughtful design to support them.

### **The Design Opportunity**
Once emergency supplies are delivered, temporary shelters erected, and debris cleared, the real challenge begins: rebuilding the city’s infrastructure, homes, and businesses to restore normalcy. Unfortunately, this critical phase is often neglected or poorly managed. Thankfully, some of our foundation grantees have been addressing these issues for years.
Build Change is leading the way in Nepal by collaborating with local authorities to develop and enforce resilient building standards. Their approach ensures that new constructions not only withstand earthquakes but also remain cost-effective for communities. Their dedication to sustainability and community empowerment makes them a beacon of hope during these challenging times.

### **How You Can Help**
Many of us want to contribute meaningfully to Nepal’s recovery. Here are actionable steps you can take:
1. **Donate to Build Change**: This is perhaps the most impactful way to support long-term transformation in Nepal. Every dollar goes directly toward creating safer structures and empowering local builders.
2. **Support Creative Market’s Initiative**: In May, hundreds of Creative Market shops are donating up to 100% of their earnings to Nepal disaster relief. The Autodesk Foundation will match the first $20,000 donated, ensuring funds reach All Hands, a nonprofit addressing both immediate and future needs of affected communities. Check out Creative Market’s blog for details.
3. **Participate in the Pixlr Challenge**: Thanks to support from the Autodesk Foundation, Pixlr will donate $20,000 to Build Change this month. The weekly challenge in early May encouraged users to share photos under the theme “Message for Nepal.†Visit the Pixlr blog for more inspiration.

### **A Collective Commitment**
At Autodesk, we’re fully committed to aiding Nepal’s rebuilding process—from partnering with organizations like Build Change to organizing employee-led volunteer initiatives. Our collective effort can create lasting change and ensure a safer future for generations of Nepalis. While natural disasters will inevitably occur, investing in resilience benefits everyone. Let’s come together to build a stronger, more secure world—one where design and innovation drive progress.
Thank you for your compassion and willingness to act. Together, we can turn tragedy into opportunity.
