Hyundai Motor independently develops solid-state batteries for electric vehicles

According to foreign media reports, Hyundai is independently developing solid-state batteries for use by its electric vehicles . Hyundai has established pilot production facilities. Industry insiders revealed to reporters: "Modern is conducting research and development of solid-state batteries through the battery research and development team of Nanyang R&D Center, and has achieved certain technical level."

Due to the increase in energy density, safety and reliability, solid-state rechargeable batteries have drawn great attention in the industry. Compared to liquid electrolytes, solid electrolytes perform better in a variety of ways, including: lithium dendrite formation on the electrodes, flammability, and battery leakage. It uses a non-flammable and more reliable inorganic solid electrolyte (SE) to replace the original organic liquid electrolyte, which improves the safety and durability of the system while simplifying the battery design, making the large-capacity electrode material - sulfur anode Used in combination with a lithium metal cathode, it is difficult to achieve this combination configuration in a conventional liquid electrolyte battery.

All-solid-state batteries also improve package energy efficiency, and their cell design allows for stacking and bipolar structures in series, as well as reducing the dead space between cells, resulting in high energy density. However, the technical challenge of this product is its limited power density due to the low conductivity of the solid electrolyte ions, electrode/electrolyte interface compatibility and limited electrode dynamics.

It is said that Hyundai is currently developing self-developed solid-state batteries and has not cooperated with Samsung SDI or LG Chem. These two companies are professional manufacturers of electric vehicle batteries in Korea. A number of car companies (Toyota, Volkswagen and Ford) have shown strong interest in their solid-state batteries because their performance is stronger than lithium batteries .

Hyundai Motor is participating in and/or providing financial support for various advanced solid-state battery R&D projects, including: Korea Ceramics Technology Institute (KICET) and China's Tsinghua University, and Hanyang University. The University of Texas at Austin, led by John Goodenough.
