From beveragefamilyfuneralhome.com: Don spent over three decades serving his community as a firefighter with the Chicago Fire Department, retiring in November 1996 after 31 years of dedicated service. He was an active member of CFD Union Local 2, holding various leadership roles, including Business Agent. Throughout his career, he served with several units, such as Snorkel Squad 2, Flying Squad 3, Squad 4, Squad 5, Engine 88, and the Office of Fire Investigation (OFI). His work earned him many commendations, and he was known for his professionalism and commitment to public safety. After retiring from the Chicago Fire Department, Don continued to serve his community as a volunteer firefighter with the Sandwich Fire Department, eventually becoming its chief. He retired from that role in July 2016 following a battle with cancer. His dedication to his hometown and family was unwavering throughout his life. Don's passion for acting began during his time as an arson investigator with the OFI. His real-life experiences inspired the character of Inspector Don Rimgale in the 1991 film "Backdraft," portrayed by Robert DeNiro. Though not a major star, Don made appearances in the film and was credited in the closing credits. This led him to join the Screen Actors Guild, secure an agent, and pursue more roles in film and television. He appeared in several movies, including "Baby’s Day Out," "Gladiator," "Chain Reaction," "The Fugitive," "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Part Two – Mask of Sanity," and "Under the Bus." On television, he made guest appearances on shows like "The Untouchables," "Missing Persons," "Angel Street," "Early Edition," "Legacy of Lies," and "Polish Hill." He also became a familiar face on talk shows, appearing on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," "Good Morning America," and "Entertainment Tonight." Don is survived by his wife, Sharon (nee Klug) Rimgale, whom he married 30 years ago; his siblings Barbara of Orlando, FL, Ron (Bernie) of Nashville, TN, and Adam, Jr. of Tucson, AZ; his children Becky Mannarelli, Donald “Donn†Rimgale, Jr., Roxanne (Tim) Gardner, Rachel Rimgale, Staff Sergeant Robert Rimgale (retired), and Staff Sergeant Timothy (Brittany) Rimgale, who is currently serving in the U.S. military; his grandchildren Mike Mannarelli, Ryan Rotter, Griffin and Simon Gardner, and Abigale Rimgale; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
