Excerpts from lakecountyjournal.com: About 7:20 p.m. on Friday evening, two boys were out in paddle boats on Bangs Lake in Wauconda. They had been playing around the neighborhood and decided to take the boats onto the water, according to officials. The boys became frightened due to the strong winds and choppy conditions, and they jumped into the lake to swim back to shore, police reported. Nearby fishermen heard screams and pulled an 11-year-old boy from the water, bringing him to safety. Fire department divers initially couldn’t find the second boy, who was identified as Geraldo Rodriguez, 9. The Wauconda Fire District requested additional divers and sonar specialists. The search was switched from rescue to recovery by about 10:30 p.m. and continued until nearly 3 a.m. Saturday morning. A sonar team located the boy’s body around noon on Saturday near the deepest part of the lake, which is approximately 30 feet deep. The water temperature was around 45 degrees Fahrenheit, and the surviving child is currently receiving treatment for hypothermia. Several fire departments and emergency services from nearby towns, including Lake Zurich, Barrington, Long Grove, Round Lake, Fox Lake, Countryside, Grayslake, McHenry Township, Crystal Lake, Buffalo Grove, Lake Forest, Libertyville, Mundelein, Cary, Nunda Rural, Gurnee, Newport, Huntley, Fox River Grove, Richmond, and Wonder Lake, all contributed to the search and recovery efforts. Multiple photos from the scene show firefighters and emergency responders working tirelessly, using drones and specialized equipment to locate the missing boy.
