Carpentersville engine in production
Martin Nowak and Ron Wolkoff recently came across some exclusive "in-production" images showcasing an impressive custom rescue pumper being crafted by Ferrara Fire Apparatus for the Carpentersville Fire Department. These photos provide a fascinating glimpse into the meticulous process of building such advanced firefighting equipment.

The vehicle, designated as H-4974, is set to be a game-changer for the department based in Carpentersville, Illinois. This custom rig is designed to handle both firefighting and rescue operations with precision and efficiency. Under the hood, it features a Ferrara Ember custom fire chassis equipped with a powerful Cummins ISL9 engine delivering 450 horsepower, paired with an Allison 3000 EVS transmission for smooth gear changes. The extended medium cab boasts a 12-inch raised roof, offering ample space for five occupants, while the interior includes an EMS cabinet strategically placed behind the officer's seat for quick access to medical supplies.
The body of the truck is constructed from heavy-duty extruded aluminum, ensuring durability and resilience. It comes with left and right side compartments that offer generous storage, measuring 15 inches deep at the top and 28 inches at the bottom. A unique Ferrara Ladders-Thru-The-Tank storage module is integrated, allowing for efficient use of space without compromising accessibility. Additionally, spare SCBA tanks are mounted above the rear wheels for added convenience.
Equipped with cutting-edge firefighting technology, the pump system includes a Hale QMAX capable of delivering up to 1500 gallons per minute (GPM). The pump is controlled via side panel controls, enhanced by Fire Research’s Pump Boss pressure governor. Each steamer inlet is fitted with Hale MIV-E intake valves, while triple speedlays ensure rapid deployment during emergencies. The right side features a large diameter LDH discharge, complemented by a rear 2-1/2†discharge point. For high-flow operations, the deck gun is plumbed with TFT Extend-A-Gun and an Akron 3416 monitor, providing versatility and power when needed most.
The vehicle carries a robust 1000-gallon polyethylene water tank, ensuring prolonged firefighting capabilities without frequent refills. Safety and visibility are prioritized with a suite of Whelen LED warning lights, including a Traffic Advisor system to manage traffic flow during incidents. Federal GH scene lights and Fire Research Evolution 12V LED telescopic lights further enhance the truck’s presence and operational effectiveness, with two rear body lights and two mounted on the rear cab wall. A brow light adds an extra layer of illumination for better situational awareness.
In addition to its technical specifications, the H-4974 also boasts several thoughtful features designed to improve operator comfort and functionality. From ergonomic seating arrangements to intuitive control layouts, every detail has been carefully considered to optimize performance under demanding conditions.

As these images reveal, the collaboration between Ferrara Fire Apparatus and the Carpentersville Fire Department exemplifies excellence in engineering and craftsmanship. This new engine represents the future of firefighting technology, combining state-of-the-art design with practical solutions tailored to meet modern emergency response needs. Whether tackling urban blazes or rural rescues, this rig promises to deliver unmatched reliability and performance.
Stay tuned for more updates as this remarkable vehicle nears completion and joins the ranks of the Carpentersville Fire Department.
