Autodesk Pushes the Boundaries of BIM in the Evolution of the Architect (Part I)

At the upcoming AIA Convention in Philadelphia starting May 19, the architectural world will gather to explore the latest trends and innovations shaping our industry. This year's event will highlight groundbreaking advancements in generative and computational design, cloud-based collaboration, and the fusion of gaming and architectural visualization. Architects are at the forefront of addressing climate change, one project at a time, and AIA 2016 will showcase how these efforts are evolving. For over three decades, Autodesk has been a trusted partner for architects, continuously innovating alongside them. This year, we're excited to celebrate the rapid transformation of our profession and the ways in which BIM is pushing the boundaries of what's possible. Our booth at AIA, number 3531, will offer a glimpse into the future of design and construction. Back in the day, architects worked in isolation at their drafting tables. Today, they're part of a dynamic, interconnected ecosystem where collaboration is key. From the very beginning of a project, architects consider aesthetics, performance, constructability, cost efficiency, and operational effectiveness. They work seamlessly with engineers, construction consultants, and other experts to bring designs to life. Even if you're unable to attend AIA, we've prepared a two-part series to give you a sneak peek of what's happening at our booth. BIM is at the heart of everything we do, and we're now seeing the full potential of extended BIM realized. Revit remains a cornerstone for architects, but it's not just about what Revit does independently—it's about what it enables when combined with our cloud-based tools. Revit is now faster, connected to the cloud, and designed to help architects achieve their goals more effectively. However, our journey with Revit is just the beginning of exploring extended BIM and how it benefits our users. One exciting aspect is cloud collaboration. Teams are increasingly distributed, and we're helping them work together more efficiently through the cloud. Tools like A360 Team and A360 Collaboration for Revit allow teams to centralize project information and collaborate in real-time. For instance, the Los Angeles International Airport Midfield Satellite Concourse project involves two leading design firms working together in A360. All stakeholders have access to the latest versions of the Revit models, schedules, and other critical documents, streamlining the design process. Imagine capturing your next big idea wherever you are. With FormIt 360 and FormIt 360 Pro, architects can sketch their concepts digitally and seamlessly transition them into detailed BIM models. FormIt 360 is free and accessible via web browsers or tablets, allowing quick and easy ideation. FormIt 360 Pro adds real-time collaboration, energy analysis, and access to the Autodesk materials library, making it a powerful tool for early-stage design. Roy Malcolm of DPR Construction appreciates the interoperability between FormIt 360 and Revit, noting that it fills a gap left by earlier tools like SketchUp. Meanwhile, José Bassalo of Meia Dois Nove enjoys the tactile experience FormIt offers, blending traditional sketching with digital precision. Generative design is another frontier we're exploring with Project Fractal. This tool uses algorithms to explore countless design possibilities, helping architects solve complex challenges like hospital space planning under strict constraints. Perkins+Will Atlanta is testing Project Fractal to optimize patient bed counts while meeting stringent client requirements. If you're attending AIA, don't miss the opportunity to engage with our generative design team during a special focus group. You can also visit thebuildinglab.info to learn more about Project Fractal and watch a demonstration of its capabilities. Stay tuned for Part II, where we'll delve deeper into computational design, innovative visualization techniques, and how a small firm is making a big impact on sustainability through Revit and Insight 360. We look forward to seeing you at AIA 2016 and continuing the conversation about the future of architecture!
