3DRV: Driven by Design Road Tour Takes Nationwide Pulse on 3D Technologies

After spending two months traveling across the U.S., the 3DRV: Driven by Design road tour has uncovered an impressive range of ways that businesses and individuals are leveraging 3D design, reality capture, and fabrication technologies to transform the world around them. TJ McCue, who hosts the tour and is also an author, is using this opportunity to raise awareness about 3D technology and educate the public on how they can take advantage of these tools, many of which are either free or quite affordable. "People from consumers to business owners find 3D scanning, printing, and design intriguing, and often a bit baffling," McCue noted. "But once we start talking about it, they're always curious, engaged, and eager to learn more." The 3DRV road tour, which began on May 16, 2014, is sponsored by leading tech companies like Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), HP, NVIDIA, Stratasys, FARO, and Jayco. Over the course of eight months, the tour will cover more than 100 planned stops across the U.S. Some highlights from the initial leg of the journey include events like Maker Faire, building a lunar lander for space exploration, modeling for cleaner operating room environments, and even laser scanning a Starbucks. Artists are utilizing free 3D design apps and 3D printing, while engineers are employing 3D design and simulation to enhance infrastructure like bridges and roads. "There's innovation happening everywhere you look that gives us a glimpse into the future of how things will be made," said Amar Hanspal, a senior vice president at Autodesk. "This tour aligns perfectly with our mission to empower everyone to design and make anything they can dream up." In just 69 days, McCue has covered 4,627 miles, visited 32 locations, consumed 207 cups of coffee, and written 33 blog posts. "There's definitely a buzz out there, especially when people realize that we're on the verge of a true revolution in making, and it's something they can be part of," McCue added. "It's clear after six weeks on the road that 'manufacturing' isn't confined to factories anymore. Affordable and accessible technology now allows anyone to become their own designer and manufacturer." Angela Simoes, 415-547-2388 angela@autodesk.com --- As I sit here reflecting on the last couple of months spent on the road with the 3DRV tour, I'm reminded of how much this experience has opened my eyes to the incredible potential of 3D technology. It's not just about futuristic gadgets or high-end industrial applications—it's about democratizing creation and giving everyone the tools they need to bring their ideas to life. Every stop has been a new adventure, whether it's meeting passionate makers at a local hackathon or learning about cutting-edge research at a university lab. The energy is contagious, and it's inspiring to see so many people embracing these technologies in their everyday lives. If you haven’t already, I highly recommend checking out some of the stories from the tour. They really highlight the transformative power of 3D design and fabrication in industries ranging from healthcare to entertainment. And if you ever wondered what it takes to run a cross-country road trip like this, trust me—it's equal parts exhausting and exhilarating! Let me know if you'd like to hear more about specific stops or meetups. Until then, keep exploring and creating!
