3DRV: Driven by Design Road Tour Takes Nationwide Pulse on 3D Technologies
Public Company Information:
NASDAQ:ADSK
SAN FRANCISCO – (BUSINESS WIRE) – After spending nearly two months on the road, the 3DRV: Driven by Design tour has started to reveal the various ways businesses and individuals are leveraging 3D design, reality capture, and fabrication technologies to reshape the world around them.
TJ McCue, the tour's host and author, is also working to raise awareness about 3D technology and educate the public on how to take full advantage of these tools, many of which are either free or quite affordable.
"Whether you're a consumer or a business owner, people find 3D (scanning, printing, design) both fascinating and sometimes puzzling. Once we start discussing it, they're always curious, engaged, and most are really keen to learn more," said McCue.
The 3DRV road tour, which launched on May 16, 2014, and is sponsored by Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), HP, NVIDIA, Stratasys, FARO, and Jayco, will make over 100 scheduled stops across the U.S. during its eight-month journey. Stops from the initial leg of the trip showcased the diverse applications of 3D tech across the nation, including events like Maker Faire, building a lunar lander, 3D printing in space, modeling for clean air in operating rooms, personal manufacturing with Monkey Likes Shiny, laser scanning a Starbucks, free 3D design apps and 3D printing used by artists, and 3D design and simulation to improve bridges and roads.
"There's innovation happening everywhere in the country that can provide insight into where the future of making things is heading," said Amar Hanspal, senior vice president at Autodesk. "This tour aligns perfectly with our goal to help everyone design and make anything they can dream up."
In just 69 days, McCue has covered 4,627 miles, made 32 stops, consumed 207 cups of coffee, and written 33 blog posts. "There's a strong vibe out there, for sure. A buzz that intensifies when people sense we're on the brink of a true revolution in making, and it's open to them. From government agencies to business owners, people find 3D in all its forms—scanning, printing, design—an exciting field to explore," added McCue. "After six weeks on the road, it's clear that 'manufacturing' is no longer confined to factories or traditional industrial settings. Today's affordable and accessible technology allows anyone to become their own designer and manufacturer."

As the tour continues, I'm constantly reminded of how transformative these technologies can be. It's inspiring to see how diverse industries and everyday people are embracing 3D design and fabrication. Whether it's a local artist creating unique pieces or a startup developing cutting-edge solutions, the possibilities seem endless. I've learned so much already, and I'm excited to see what the rest of the journey holds.
