Tiskilwa train derailment
Tim Olk traveled to Tiskilwa, Illinois—a small town located 124 miles southwest of Chicago—on Friday to capture the aftermath of a partial train derailment that occurred overnight. The incident involved a freight train carrying ethanol for Archer Daniels Midland Co., one of the country’s largest corn processors.
According to the *Chicago Tribune*, the train crashed and exploded near the northeast side of the village early Friday morning. Residents reported being awakened by the force of the explosions, which sent bright orange flames and thick plumes of smoke into the sky.
The Associated Press noted that each tanker car typically holds around 29,000 gallons of ethanol. Of the 131-car train, 26 cars derailed, including seven to nine that were loaded with ethanol, according to Mick Burkart, chief operating officer of Iowa Interstate Railroad. Due to the ongoing fire, officials couldn’t immediately approach the scene to determine the cause of the accident.
Several photographs taken by Tim Olk show the aftermath of the incident. One image captures smoldering tank cars scattered in a field of corn, while another shows local fire departments using large water tanks to combat the flames. Firefighters deployed a deck gun on a nearby street and used a deluge gun to cool down the remaining burning tank cars. In areas without fire hydrants, portable water tanks provided up to 6,000 gallons of water to assist in the firefighting efforts.
