Tiskilwa train derailment

Tim Olk traveled to Tiskilwa, Illinois—124 miles southwest of Chicago—on Friday to capture the aftermath of a partial train derailment that occurred overnight. The incident involved a freight train carrying ethanol for Archer Daniels Midland Co., one of the nation's largest corn processors. According to the *Chicago Tribune*, the train crashed and exploded near the northeast side of the village early Friday morning. Witnesses reported being awakened by the force of the explosions, which sent bright orange flames and thick plumes of smoke into the sky. The Associated Press reported that each tanker car typically holds around 29,000 gallons of ethanol. Of the 131-car train, 26 cars derailed, with seven to nine of them loaded with ethanol, according to Mick Burkart, COO of Iowa Interstate Railroad. Firefighters were unable to approach the scene immediately due to the ongoing fire, making it difficult to determine the cause of the accident at the time. Photos from the scene show smoldering tank cars scattered along a field of corn. Local firefighters used water from portable tanks—some holding up to 6,000 gallons—to combat the blaze. A deck gun was deployed in a nearby street, and firefighters worked through the night to cool the remaining tankers and prevent further explosions. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of transporting hazardous materials through rural areas. While no injuries have been reported, the environmental impact and long-term effects on the local community remain under investigation. Tim has compiled a gallery of additional photos from the scene, which can be viewed [here](#).
