Most People Think Solar Panels are the Future of Home Improvement

Recently, we carried out a survey among UK homeowners to explore their attitudes toward home energy upgrades. The results showed that the majority (63%) prefer solar panels over other renewable technologies if they were to invest in eco-friendly solutions for their homes. Coming in second place, ground source heat pumps were selected by 25% of respondents.

Meanwhile, hydro/biomass systems and domestic wind turbines were the least favored choices, with only 6.1% and 5.2% of participants opting for these options respectively.

Lockdowns Reshaping Homeowners' Perspectives

The nationwide lockdowns enforced in the UK due to the COVID-19 pandemic have significantly influenced homeowners' willingness to make changes to their living spaces. Approximately 40% of those surveyed stated that the lockdowns had altered their perception of their homes, prompting them to consider making improvements.

Interestingly, the lockdowns had a greater impact on people's mindset compared to the colder seasons. Only 29% mentioned that the harsh winter conditions motivated them to enhance their home's energy efficiency. The UK has experienced three national lockdowns so far—first implemented on March 23, 2020, followed by additional ones in November 2020 and January 2021. Spending more time at home during the day likely increased daily power usage and costs, leading many to seek cost-effective energy alternatives. With advancements in renewable technology and decreasing expenses, homeowners now have an opportunity to plan for a sustainable future.

Changing Habits Due to the Pandemic

With more individuals working remotely, there's a growing emphasis on managing energy consumption and costs, particularly during a time when income levels have been impacted. Studies indicate that we're sleeping longer during these unusual times, causing typical morning routines like using the kettle or toaster to occur later in the day.

Data collected from tens of thousands of smart meters and reported by Sky News revealed that we're now consuming more energy in the afternoon than in the mornings—a period when most of us would typically be at work. There was also a notable rise in electricity usage in London, possibly due to more residents working from home. However, during enforced lockdowns, energy consumption dropped as people left their homes before returning under restrictions. It remains unclear whether these behavioral shifts will persist post-pandemic and how quickly—if ever—we'll return to pre-COVID norms. For now, there will continue to be a strong focus on energy efficiency as we explore practical alternatives.

Solar Panels Boost Property Prices by £32,459

According to research by Effectivehome.co.uk, installing solar panels in residential properties has boosted property values in the UK by an average of £32,459. Published in August 2020, this study strengthens the case for homeowners to adopt solar technology like panels and batteries. The substantial price hike stems directly from the long-term savings homeowners can expect post-installation—up to £27,500 on electricity bills over 30 years!

Benefits of Solar Panels

There are numerous reasons to install solar panels at your home. These include:

  • Enhancing your home's Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).
  • Reducing your carbon footprint.
  • Helping combat global warming.
  • Ensuring energy security for your family.
  • Turning your home into a clean, green power station.

First invented in the mid-1950s and introduced domestically in the mid-1970s, solar panel technology in 2021 provides a reliable and financially sound method to boost energy efficiency while saving money over the long term. Additionally, given that over 73,000 terawatts of solar energy hit the Earth continuously from the sun—more than 10,000 times the world's total energy consumption—it becomes increasingly evident why transitioning away from fossil fuels needs to happen sooner rather than later.

Fun Facts About Solar Energy
