3-Alarm fire in Rolling Meadows, 3-4-15 (part 1)

Late Wednesday evening (March 4th, 2015), emergency services in Rolling Meadows responded to a call at 5201 Carriageway Drive regarding an apartment fire on the third floor. According to initial reports, the fire started when a couch caught ablaze, quickly spreading up the wall. As crews made their way to the scene, Battalion 15 received updates indicating significant flames and upgraded the response level to a Code 4 for an active fire. Upon arrival, responding officers noted fire spewing out of a third-floor window and discovered that someone had jumped from a third-floor balcony. This prompted an escalation to a MABAS Box Alarm. Eyewitness accounts suggest that police officers were already administering CPR to the individual who had jumped when firefighters arrived. The Chicago Tribune later confirmed that the apartment had been cleared of residents, though one person had unfortunately perished due to the fire. Rolling Meadows Fire Chief Scott Franzgrote identified the victim as someone who had leaped from a third-floor unit. The deceased was transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, where they were pronounced dead. By approximately 10 PM, Chief Franzgrote stated that the fire was under control but still required ongoing efforts to fully extinguish it. Both the first and second floors of the building had been evacuated, while teams continued their search and firefighting operations on the third floor. Throughout the incident, the alarm system was escalated further to a Second Alarm and then a Third Alarm before being officially marked as resolved just before midnight. Multiple on-site witnesses have captured photos and videos of the event, which will be shared in a series of posts. Interestingly, this building is directly across the street from another structure within the same complex that previously experienced a three-alarm fire several years prior. Attached is a photo taken by Steve Redick, offering a clear view of the fire engine responding to the intense blaze during the cold winter night. Additionally, an embedded video provides additional context and visuals from the scene. Stay tuned for more updates as we gather further details.
