HIP Components: Breakthrough in ribbon bonding technology

Summary

The joint effort of Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) and Kurmais AG has led to the groundbreaking development of a highly efficient MWT cell connection technology. This innovative technical cost advantage is obvious, the loss is very low.

Foreword

In the current intense competition in the solar energy industry, PV module manufacturers are trying their best to differentiate their products, the main direction is to achieve the highest component efficiency with the lowest cost. At present, although there are numerous technical concepts and marketing programs that claim to have mature products, most products can not stand the careful study. There are too many examples that show that some of the technical advantages achieved in one area do not necessarily translate into the final benefits of a component. For example, although the cost of the cell is reduced, the final cost of the component is not reduced. For another example, the efficiency of the cell may be improved, but the final module efficiency has not been increased to the same extent.

Is the difference between the contact cell and the back contact cell

Careful study of the various technical concepts that come into contact with the cells and components, you will see the natural defects of this technology. There is a dilemma in cell-to-cell assembly: in order to reduce cell-to-cell (CTM) losses, the total cross-sectional area of the ribbon or connecting wire must be increased. However, The shadow caused by the ribbon, the cross-sectional area must be reduced as much as possible. The use of multiple wires to replace the welding wire ribbon to some extent alleviated the problem, but does not effectively solve the problem. No BSF, PERC, HIT, or any other positive battery, no single type of battery can escape this dilemma. Only the back contact cell can be connected with a large cross-section cell without any shadow on the front.

For this reason, back-contact cell technology is undoubtedly more attractive than positive-contact cells to further enhance the efficiency of cells and components so far, no matter IBC, EWT or MWT. Both of these technologies are suitable for cell connections: Due to the large cross-section cell interconnects, CTM losses are low and have no positive shadow. While conductive backplanes provide the conditions for large cross-section cell connections, the industry has been looking for a low-cost way to achieve the same low CTM loss rates as well.

A new way to connect

Coomassie and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems have developed a new interconnection method called HIP (or high-efficiency) technology. This approach uses ribbons, as well as an innovative method of interconnecting cells. The CTM losses it achieves and the power of the components have been verified by an independent certification body.

The HIP component technology has several key advantages over other connection technologies. First, the cost of materials and equipment is low, CTM losses may be below 1%. At the 2013 Shanghai SNEC show, Kümmes (Booth E3-520) will be showcasing the standard 60 solar modules manufactured with this new connection technology. At the show, the Küssel and Fraunhofer Solar Systems Institute will demonstrate the obvious cost-per-watt advantage of this new technology.

Second, the production of such high-performance MWT cells and HIP components can be done both on the existing production line and on the new production line. Technology, equipment and raw materials are all available. Compared with other new technologies, such innovative solutions from Kumys require minimal changes to existing production processes and require very little additional costs. This allows component manufacturers to quickly convert their products to more efficient components, which is where the leading component companies win the key.
