CATL do a good job of battery thermal management, hot and cold are not afraid

Dr. Yau of the CATL R&D Center told us that CATL is equipped with a battery thermal management system in the passenger car system, including a cooling module and a heating module. When the temperature of the battery system exceeds the high temperature threshold, the cooling module is started to cool the battery. When the temperature of the battery system is lower than the low temperature threshold, the heating module is started to raise the temperature of the battery to ensure that the battery always operates at a comfortable temperature, ensuring the battery's Service life.

In winter, "armpits" is a headache for pure electric vehicles. Long-term low temperature driving will affect battery life. For this reason, CATL has conducted long-term research on the low-temperature charge and discharge performance of battery systems, and has accumulated a number of test and simulation data corresponding to different types of batteries. Tolerate cold and withstand fire

It is "real gold" that can withstand extreme cold. In March 2016, a pure electric passenger car equipped with a CATL power battery system drove into Mohe, a land in the extreme north of China, and conducted a one-month pure-electric vehicle extreme cold test. In March, the temperature in Mohe falls to minus 40 degrees and the average temperature is minus 20 degrees. The testing conditions are extremely harsh. As of now, the pure electric passenger car that is tested in Mohe runs smoothly, all parameters are normal, and the quality of CATL has been witnessed.

True Gold must not only withstand the cold, but also withstand the "fire." Damage to the battery at temperatures above and below the normal range is irreversible. According to CATL, in the design of the cell, CATL will improve the cycle life of the battery at high or low temperatures by selecting high temperature or low temperature resistant core materials. From the perspective of cell manufacturing, the overall service life of the battery system can be effectively provided by improving the consistency of the cell core performance.

The footprint of CATL has been hot throughout the year in Sanya, Hainan. There, a number of tourist and sightseeing vehicles equipped with CATL power batteries were put into operation from the end of 2013 and have so far been operating at high temperatures and all data are normal. Up to now, pure electric tourist vehicles have operated a total of 12,000 kilometers.

Unique martial arts: battery liquid thermal management system

In order to solve the challenges of battery thermal management in harsh environments and poor operating conditions, CATL independently designed and developed a battery pack liquid cooling and heating management system. This thermal management system has high heat exchange efficiency, light weight, good reliability, and temperature. Strong control capabilities.

CATL uses a combination of design, simulation and test methods to develop battery thermal management systems, including hardware and software development. In terms of hardware design, the integrated design of the vehicle cooling unit and the battery pack thermal management system is optimized to achieve comprehensive performance optimization. In the high temperature environment, the CATL battery thermal management system uses the cooling liquid to enter into the battery box body to achieve the purpose of quickly cooling the battery module through a specially designed high-efficiency heat exchanger. In a low-temperature environment, the thermal management system uses a heater to heat the coolant so that the battery temperature quickly reaches the target operating temperature range.

In software design, the battery temperature control strategy is integrated into CATL's Battery Management System (BMS), taking full account of various normal and abnormal usage scenarios to ensure rapid control results, accuracy, and robustness (system robustness). . System tests under harsh operating conditions indicate that the battery temperature can be controlled within the optimal operating temperature range of 25 to 40 degrees.

At the same time, CATL has developed a composite material box with thermal insulation properties, which is perfectly combined with the battery liquid thermal management system, reducing the dependence of the battery pack on the external environment, and achieving the effect of “cool in winter and cool in summer”, which greatly improves the user Experience.

Finally, CAGL product development director Hu Jianguo told Bus.com that many people have misconceptions about the application of battery systems. They think that as long as the batteries are optimized for design, they can adapt to different application environments with a wide temperature range, and do not have to spend money on thermal management. In fact, good thermal management can not only extend the application range of the battery system, but also maintain the temperature uniformity among the individual battery cells in the system. Temperature uniformity is critical to maintaining the long-term consistency of the battery, and maintaining battery consistency plays a decisive role in extending service life.
