How Much Plastic Waste is Actually Recycled?

Plastic pollution is a growing concern that affects every corner of our planet. While recycling is often seen as the solution, it's not as effective as we hope. In fact, only about 9% of global plastic waste is actually recycled, with the rest ending up in landfills, oceans, or being burned—often in ways that harm the environment. At Office H2O, we believe that reducing plastic use is one of the most impactful steps we can take. We’ve already helped over 600,000 people eliminate single-use plastic bottles in office settings through our bottleless water coolers. But this is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. Why is plastic waste such a problem? It’s everywhere—bags, bottles, packaging, and even parts of cars and buildings. In 2015 alone, nearly 7 million tons of virgin plastic were produced worldwide, but less than 10% was recycled. The rest either ends up in landfills, pollutes the environment, or is incinerated, releasing harmful chemicals into the air. Plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose, which means that the vast majority of all plastic ever made still exists today. By 2050, it's estimated that there could be more plastic in the ocean than fish by weight—equivalent to the weight of 35,000 Empire State Buildings. This is a shocking reality that demands immediate action. The recycling industry is struggling. Many materials are not recyclable, and the process is complicated by contamination and mixed waste streams. When China stopped accepting U.S. recyclables in 2018, many cities had to stop their recycling programs altogether, leading to more plastic ending up in landfills. Even when plastic is recycled, it’s often downcycled into lower-quality products, which means it can’t be reused again. This highlights the need for better alternatives and more sustainable practices. So what can you do? First, understand what is and isn’t recyclable. Plastics labeled #3, #6, and #7 are generally not recyclable. Check the numbers on your plastic items to make informed choices. If your local recycling center doesn’t accept certain plastics, look for alternative programs that might. There are also creative ways to reuse plastic. For example, you can build eco-bricks from plastic waste, create vertical gardens using soda bottles, or turn glass bottles into stylish vases. Upcycling is a great way to reduce waste and add value to discarded materials. At Office H2O, we’re committed to helping businesses reduce their environmental footprint. Our bottleless water systems provide clean, safe drinking water without the need for plastic bottles. With advanced filtration technology, we ensure that every drop is pure and free from contaminants. Join us in making a difference. Start by reducing your plastic use, reusing what you can, and recycling properly. Together, we can create a cleaner, healthier planet for future generations.
