The Highland Park Fire Department was called to a fire in the attic of a large, three-story brick home on Sheridan Road around 7:15 PM on Monday. Upon arrival, firefighters observed flames coming through the roof of the structure. The incident was escalated to a working fire, with units from Glencoe, Deerfield, and Highwood responding for mutual aid. First-arriving companies attempted an aggressive attack but struggled to access the attic due to complex roof elevations.
As the situation worsened, a second alarm was called, bringing additional engines from Northbrook, Winnetka, Lake Bluff, and Knollwood. Trucks from Northfield and Wheeling also arrived. Wilmette sent a squad, while ambulances from Highland Park, Highwood, Prospect Heights, and Libertyville were on scene.
Photos from the event show heavy smoke billowing from the attic above the third floor. Highwood was the first truck on the scene, positioning Truck 37, a 75' HME/Smeal quint, opposite Highland Park Engine 32, a 2010 Spartan Gladiator/Crimson engine that took the south end of the driveway and tapped a hydrant across the street. Firefighters faced challenges as the blaze spread through the eaves, allowing them to stand in areas where the roof had burned away.
A master stream from Highwood was used to tackle the fire at the roof’s peak, as direct access was limited. Despite the intense fire on the upper floors, water and smoke affected the entire house. Northfield's unit was set up as a precaution but did not engage in active firefighting.
Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro both documented the incident, capturing several images of the fire and response. Tim has a gallery here, and Larry has one here. The fire is believed to have been contained without major structural collapse, though significant damage occurred to the upper levels of the home.
