Highland Park 2-11 5-9-11
The Highland Park Fire Department was called to a fire in the attic of a large, three-story brick home on Sheridan Road around 7:15 PM on Monday. Upon arrival, firefighters observed flames coming through the roof of the residence located in the 1400 block of the street. The incident was quickly escalated to a working fire, with units from Glencoe, Deerfield, and Highwood responding for mutual aid. First-arriving companies made an aggressive attack but faced challenges accessing the attic due to the complex roof structure. As the fire spread, the alarm was raised to a second alarm, bringing additional engines from Northbrook, Winnetka, Lake Bluff, and Knollwood. Trucks from Northfield and Wheeling also arrived on scene. Local ambulances from Highland Park, Highwood, Prospect Heights, and Libertyville were on standby.
Photos from the scene show heavy smoke pouring from the attic above the third floor. Highwood was the first truck on the scene, positioning Truck 37, a 75-foot HME/Smeal quint, opposite Highland Park Engine 32. The first engine unit to arrive was Highland Park Engine 32, a 2010 Spartan Gladiator/Crimson pumper, which took the south side of the driveway and connected to a hydrant across the street. Flames were clearly visible from the attic, and firefighters could be seen standing where the roof had burned away in some areas.
As the fire continued to burn along the peak of the roof, Highwood’s master stream was deployed to tackle the fire in areas that were inaccessible from inside. Although the fire remained largely confined to the upper floors, water and smoke affected the entire house. Northfield’s truck was positioned as a precaution but did not enter the fire zone.
