Fatal fire in Huntley
The Huntley Fire Protection District responded to a second alarm for an apartment fire on Sunday, which tragically resulted in the death of a resident. The incident occurred at the Woodcreek Apartments, located at 11702 Woodcreek Drive in Huntley, and began in the first-floor unit of Allen "Al" R. Jacobs, a 47-year-old man who had lived there.
According to the Daily Herald, Jacobs suffered a severe car accident as a teenager that left him paralyzed from the waist down. His longtime friend Randy Albrecht, from Lake in the Hills, recalled how Jacobs had always feared that his life might end in a situation where he couldn't escape. On Sunday morning, Albrecht stood outside the burned-out building, reflecting on the loss of his friend, whose life was cut short by the early morning blaze.
The Huntley Fire Protection District was called to the scene at 6:12 a.m. The fire quickly spread through the six-unit wood-frame building, reaching the second and third floors. A total of 15 neighboring fire departments assisted in the response. One firefighter from Huntley sustained a minor injury and was taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin for treatment before being released.
The Chicago Tribune reported that McHenry County officials confirmed the identity of the victim as Allen R. Jacobs. The fire displaced 10 residents and started in the unit where Jacobs was found deceased. Battalion Chief Tim Flannigan of the Huntley Fire Protection District described the structure as a six-unit wood-frame apartment building and noted that it was a two-alarm fire.
Residents in the area were shocked by the tragedy, and community members gathered to support those affected. As investigations continue, the local community mourns the loss of a man who had faced many challenges but remained resilient throughout his life.
