The Barrington & Countryside Fire Protection District (FPD) was alerted this afternoon to a barn fire at 544 Penny Road in Barrington Hills. The fire occurred at a vacant barn located on Cook County Forest Preserve land, situated behind a long-vacant house that once served as a caretaker's residence. When the first arriving units from Barrington reached the scene, the structure was already fully involved in flames. As a result, the alarm was immediately upgraded to a box alarm, dispatching water tankers and additional personnel to the location. The fire spread rapidly through the barn, but no adjacent structures were in danger. Five water tankers were dispatched to the scene, including units from Long Grove, Palatine Rural, East Dundee, Wauconda, and Bartlett. Engine companies arrived from Carpentersville, Lake Zurich, Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Hoffman Estates, and Fox River Grove. In addition, Palatine sent Quint 81, along with Cary Squad 255, Buffalo Grove Ambulance 26, and Arlington Heights Ambulance 1. Local firefighters and emergency responders worked quickly to contain the blaze, while crews also monitored the area for any signs of spreading. Tim Olk, Scott Peterson, and Larry Shapiro were on-site and are expected to share photos and updates soon. This incident highlights the importance of rapid response and coordination among multiple departments to manage such emergencies effectively.
