Vattenfall Uses Elios 3 to Map No-Go Zones in Decommissioned Power Plant
In a groundbreaking initiative, Vattenfall, one of Europe's leading energy providers, has successfully utilized the Elios 3 drone to map dangerous areas within a decommissioned power plant. This innovative approach allows teams to gather critical data without exposing personnel to hazardous environments.
The Elios 3 is equipped with advanced LiDAR technology and features a robust SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) system, enabling real-time 3D mapping of complex internal spaces. By flying into restricted zones that are unsafe for humans, the drone collects precise data, which can then be used to generate detailed 3D models using GeoSLAM software.
This project highlights the significant benefits of using drones in industrial settings. Safety is a top priority, as the Elios 3 eliminates the need for human entry into high-risk areas. Additionally, the drone’s ability to navigate tight spaces makes it ideal for mapping intricate structures, such as old staircases or confined rooms.
Vattenfall's R&D team was particularly impressed by the efficiency and accuracy of the Elios 3. The drone was able to cover a distance of up to 30-40 meters inside the stairwell, demonstrating its capability to operate over long distances while maintaining a strong signal. This not only saves time but also reduces the costs associated with traditional methods like scaffolding or rope access.
The results of the test were highly positive, with both real-time and post-processed 3D models proving invaluable for the decommissioning process. The team at Vattenfall believes that this technology could be applied to other similar facilities, significantly improving safety and operational efficiency.
As part of their ongoing commitment to innovation, Vattenfall shared the 3D models internally, showcasing the potential of drone technology in enhancing safety and reducing risks in industrial environments. The success of this project reinforces the growing importance of robotics and AI in modern industrial operations.
