Thornton is on the site now

Karl Klotz has shared some great photos and details about the Thornton Fire Department. This is another agency within MABAS Division 24, operating out of a single station that covers just 2.4 square miles. Alongside a full-time chief, the department depends on 30 part-time members to manage two Osage ambulances, two fire engines, one 50-foot TeleSqurt, one rescue unit, and a brush truck. What makes their fleet unique is the variety of manufacturers involved. Out of their four main units, they have one each from Fire Max, Custom Fire, Hackney, and Pierreville (a Canadian manufacturer). The engine is built on an International chassis, while the rescue uses a Ford F800. One of the engines features an early Spartan Gladiator cab and chassis, and the TeleSqurt is equipped with an HME 1871 cab. Most of the apparatus is painted red, but Truck 747 stands out with its teal green color. According to Karl, there are several theories behind why this particular engine was painted that way. One popular story suggests it was the result of a contest involving local schoolchildren in the mid-1990s. While that’s a fun tale, we’re curious if there’s more to the story. If you have any insight or know the real reason, feel free to leave a comment—we’d love to hear from you! Here are some of the images Karl submitted:
