Stone Park Fire Department photo history
Another photo history gallery has been added to the site, showcasing the rich heritage of the Stone Park Fire Department, part of MABAS Division 20. You can view their collection HERE, which features fire apparatus dating back to 1954. The department has a long and storied history with Darley and E-ONE engines, as well as a unique custom Pirsch pumper that stands out in their fleet.
Here’s a closer look at one of their current engines. It was an emergency purchase made in 2004 after their 2002 HME/Darley engine was destroyed in a tragic traffic accident on April 27th. The collision involved both the Stone Park and Northlake fire departments, as they were responding to a call together. Unfortunately, the crash claimed the life of Jeffrey Bergstrom, a part-time firefighter and paramedic for Stone Park.
Bergstrom also worked as a paramedic for Ambulance Company 44 of the Chicago Fire Department. His passing deeply affected the fire service community, and firefighters from across the country joined in tribute during a funeral procession through several Chicago suburbs and a memorial service held in Hillside, Illinois.
The Illinois Fire Service Institute Firefighter Record provides a detailed account of the incident, including photographs from the scene. This event serves as a somber reminder of the risks faced by those who serve in the fire service.
Below is a photo of the damaged engine that was involved in the accident. It's a powerful visual of the tragedy that changed lives forever.
