New technical standards to promote the rapid development of smart meters

According to IHSiSuppli's China Research Services, a series of new technical standards aimed at improving the quality management and control of smart meters will come into effect in August, which will help China's smart meter market to grow 9% this year, with shipments expected to top 100 million for the first time turn off. As predicted in the fourth quarter of 2012, China's meter semiconductor market began to shuffle. IHS believes that this will be a win-win situation in terms of cooperation in areas such as meter-scale microcontroller units (MCUs), metering chips and power line communications (PLCs) in China.

According to IHSiSuppli's China Research Services, a series of new technical standards aimed at improving the quality management and control of smart meters will come into effect in August, which will help China's smart meter market to grow 9% this year, with shipments expected to top 100 million for the first time turn off.

In 2012, total shipments of China's electric meters were 110.6 million, of which 98.5 million were smart meters. China's output of meters this year is expected to grow to 118.4 million, of which 107.7 million will be smart meters. In the next few years, the Chinese smart meter market will continue to grow with an average CAGR of 9.5%. Naturally, as the replacement rate accelerates, the output of ordinary electric meters will rapidly decline and will soon be dying by 2016.

In 2012, China State Grid Corporation organized tenders for purchasing smart meters, purchasing 78.3 million meters, including 76 million smart meters. Meanwhile, China Southern Power Grid purchased nearly 5.9 million meters, of which 20% are smart meters. In 2013, the bidding targets of the two major power grid companies are expected to be the same as in 2012.

This year's tender bidding process has been announced, bringing changes to the market. The more significant change is that the meter purchase price is reduced. The price of electricity data acquisition systems is also rapidly declining, posing a challenge for manufacturers of such products.

Meter chip market reshuffle

As predicted in the fourth quarter of 2012, China's meter semiconductor market began to shuffle. IHS believes that this will be a win-win situation in terms of cooperation in areas such as meter-scale microcontroller units (MCUs), metering chips and power line communications (PLCs) in China.

With the advent of new technology trends, the competitive landscape will continue to change in the near future. In addition, the limitations of system-on-chip (SoC) development are clearly easing.
