Despite starting later than many competitors, Futian has risen to become a leader in China's commercial vehicle sector. In 2007, it sold over 402,000 units, securing the top spot in Asia and second globally, just behind Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles. It is a product of state-owned enterprise reforms and represents the aspirations of Chinese automakers to pursue original innovation—ultimately aiming to lead in the global market. Twelve years ago, Futian Motors was established in Beijing by 100 corporate entities across the supply chain. Initially, the company identified a growing demand for durable and fuel-efficient light trucks in urban and rural areas. By integrating and adapting existing technologies, Futian created successful models like the Fukuda, which gained widespread acclaim. Over the years, through strategic mergers and acquisitions, Futian expanded its range and became a major player in commercial vehicles. From the launch of the Futian Scenic Light Bus in 1999 to the completion of the Auman production base in 2003, the company continuously expanded its footprint. Futian's independent innovation process evolved through three stages: initial "technology introduction and digestion," followed by "improvement" through reverse and forward development, and finally reaching the stage of "original innovation." Experts like Zhang Xiaoxuan highlight Futian's progress in this area. While some critics argue that joint ventures have hindered China's auto industry, others, including Fu Xun and Ruan Xuebin, recognize their role in cultivating talent, markets, and supply chains. However, they also emphasize the importance of moving toward original innovation. Futian has made strides in developing its own vehicle electronic control systems, which are now being implemented in heavy trucks. This marks a critical step in achieving true innovation. The company's innovative model, known as "integrated knowledge and linked innovation," combines global expertise with collaborative efforts across the supply chain. Futian's 100 founding entities include suppliers and dealers from across the country, forming a strong network for innovation. Through partnerships with international companies like AVL, Lotus, and Bosch, Futian has enhanced its capabilities in engine optimization, vehicle matching, and hybrid development. These collaborations have enabled the company to learn and grow effectively. In the field of new energy, Futian has focused on developing CNG, hybrid, and fuel cell buses. The company's Euro V division has launched several models, including city buses, long-distance buses, and tour buses, all designed to meet high environmental standards. Looking ahead, Futian aims to reduce the cost of fuel cell engines to make them more viable for mass production. The company remains optimistic about the future of zero-emission vehicles and continues to invest in research and development.
