In the Netherlands, an inspection team faced a challenge: they needed to inspect the roof of a train station without disrupting rail traffic. To avoid any service interruptions, they turned to the Elios 3 drone for a safe and efficient solution. Access The complex structure of the station made it impossible to reach the roof safely. Traditional inspections required planned downtime up to 13 weeks in advance. With the Elios 3, the team was able to gather data during the night, avoiding any disruption to regular operations. No Downtime The Elios 3 allowed the NS Stations team to conduct the inspection without halting train services or affecting public transport. Previously, such work would require closing three train lines and de-energizing the catenary system. Safety The Elios 3 provided a safe way to collect data without putting staff at risk or disturbing passengers. The complex structure made manual access dangerous, making the drone the ideal alternative. Speed Data collection was completed quickly, during the night when fewer trains and people were around. Two flight sessions were enough to cover all areas of concern. Delays on railway networks are a major issue—both for passengers and for freight. A single delay can cause ripple effects across entire supply chains. That’s why maintaining infrastructure is so important. But inspecting certain structures, like the roof of a train station, can be extremely challenging when trains are running. So what's the answer? Enter the Elios 3. This compact, durable drone has already proven its value in inspecting bridges and other hard-to-reach structures. Now, it's helping to inspect train stations too. Vortex Hardware & Maintenance BV, a Dutch partner of Flyability, has worked with NS Stations on various maintenance projects. They’ve conducted multiple successful inspections using drones. One particular project involved a historic train station built in the early 1900s, where the metal beams in the roof needed inspection. The challenge was clear: accessing the space between the roof and the metal structure was not possible without scaffolding, which would have disrupted train services. Without accurate data, maintenance had to rely on worst-case assumptions. The Elios 3 offered a safe and efficient solution. Sep Schetters and Remco Bunder from NS Stations had previously used the Elios 2 for similar tasks, including inspecting a pedestrian bridge. The success of that project gave them confidence in using the Elios 3 for this new challenge. They planned to use the LiDAR payload of the Elios 3 to map the building structure and locate cables. A ground-based LiDAR scan helped plan the flight path, ensuring compliance with safety regulations. The team also coordinated with Air Traffic Control due to the proximity of a nearby airport. Inspections were scheduled at night when there were fewer trains and people around, minimizing risks and disruptions. The Elios 3 flew through the complex space, capturing high-resolution data without interfering with daily operations. Ruben, from Vortex, used the Elios 2 for initial reconnaissance before switching to the Elios 3 for the main inspection. He followed a pre-planned route, focusing on areas of concern and conducting a full review of the station’s structure. A construction adviser was on-site to guide the process, pointing out key areas to inspect. The team also ensured no flights took place while trains were moving by having observers on the platform who communicated via radio. Previously, such inspections required scaffolding, closed train lines, and long planning periods. The Elios 3 eliminated these issues, providing real-time, high-quality data without the need for extensive downtime. Additionally, the drone’s powerful lighting system (16,000 lumens) ensured visibility even at night. Its ability to navigate tight spaces and complex environments made it the perfect tool for this task. This project demonstrated how drones can transform infrastructure maintenance. By providing detailed 3D data, the Elios 3 allows engineers to make informed decisions without shutting down entire stations. ProRail praised the technology, calling it a great alternative to traditional methods. It reduces the need for scaffolding, saves time, and minimizes inconvenience for passengers and train operators. With the Elios 3, railway managers can now inspect assets more precisely and proactively. No longer limited by outdated schedules, they can plan maintenance based on real data, saving time, money, and resources.
