The Barrington & Countryside Fire Protection District (FPD) was called to a barn fire this afternoon at 544 Penny Road in Barrington Hills. The fire occurred at a vacant barn located on Cook County Forest Preserve land, situated behind a now-abandoned house that once served as a caretaker's residence. When the first arriving units from Barrington reached the scene, the structure was already fully involved, prompting an immediate upgrade to a box alarm for water tankers and additional personnel. The barn went down quickly, and no adjacent structures were threatened. Five water tankers were dispatched to the scene, including units from Long Grove, Palatine Rural, East Dundee, Wauconda, and Bartlett. Engine companies arrived from Carpentersville, Lake Zurich, Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Hoffman Estates, and Fox River Grove. In addition to standard response, Palatine sent Quint 81, along with Cary Squad 255, Buffalo Grove Ambulance 26, and Arlington Heights Ambulance 1. Local firefighters and emergency responders, including Tim Olk, Scott Peterson, and Larry Shapiro, were on-site and are expected to share photos and updates shortly. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials say it appears to be accidental at this time. No injuries have been reported, and the area remains secure.
