Red Dot Design Award History

The Red Dot Design Award originated from the North Rhine-Westphalia Design Center (abbreviated as “Northern Design Center”). On July 30, 1954, on the initiative of Prof. Carl Hundhausen, President of the Krupp Board of Directors, the non-profit organization "Essen Industrial Model Research Institute" was established. The institute is designed by N.V. The predecessor of the center, it is committed to making a permanent product display.

On October 5th, 1955, the Institute’s first exhibition “Permanent Exhibition of Elegant Industrial Products” was opened and attracted the attention of the world. In the same year, the Essen Industrial Modeling Institute organized the first design competition and the winning entries were added to the permanent exhibition. The design competition was the Red Dot Design Award, which later became known worldwide. Since then, the Red Dot Design Award has been held once a year, and the practice of adding winning entries to permanent exhibitions has also been retained to this day.

History of the Red Dot Design Museum

The award-winning exhibition of the Red Dot Design Awards was initially held in the mountain villas in Essen. After many changes, the exhibition venue was moved to the former city library. On April 29, 1997, all exhibitions were moved to the red dot design museum located in the coal mining area of ​​the Essen Customs Union.

The prestigious Essen Reddot Design Museum was a boiler room in the coal mining area of ​​the Essen Customs Union. Designed by architects Franz Scooper and Martin Kramer, the Bauhaus style is used in architectural forms. Built in 1929. Until 1986, it was always the power engine room in the customs union coal area.

In the mid-1990s, British star designer Norman Foster transformed the old boiler room into the Red Dot Design Museum. The new glass, concrete and original old pipes, equipment and steel stairs in the museum building have created a wonderful fusion, providing an excellent stage for the exhibition of award-winning contemporary products.

The Red Dot Design Museum is one of the most important industrial relics of the 20th century and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001.
