Super intelligent particle robot can realize deformation and movement

Recently, the US Army has made new progress in the development of new robots - the use of intelligent particles to create group robots. Researchers at Georgia Tech and Northwestern University published their findings in the journal Science Robotics. Sam Stanton, head of the Complex Dynamics and Systems Program at the US Army Research Office, believes that this effort is expected to allow robotic systems to change their shape, mode and function to the task. The transformation of small robots into group robots can enhance the mechanical control of small robots by utilizing the group capabilities generated by individual combinations. We don't plan to have complex controllers, sensors, and computational models. Plug them in. Goldman et al.'s research was inspired by research on building tools. Researcher Nick Gravish found that the U-shaped nail population structure can exist independently after pouring the staples into a detachable container and removing the outer wall of the container. Although the shaking of the nail tower eventually led to the collapse of the structure, this result made Gravish realize that the ability of a mechanical object to simply wrap the structure far exceeds the performance of a single component. Researchers used 3D printers to create battery-driven smart particles. Smart particles are equipped with motors and simple sensors and have limited computing power. They can only change position when interacting with other devices. Goldman said: "Although a single robot cannot move independently, a group of multiple robots can move and contract. Super intelligent particle robots can even move at random."

The researchers noticed that if a small robot stops moving because the battery is exhausted, the remaining intelligent robots will move in the direction of the stagnant robot. The researchers also controlled their movements by adding a photo sensor to the robot: when a beam of light hits a single robot, the group robot stops dancing. Goldman said: "By adjusting the angle of the light, you can let the robot in a static state start. The whole system can be manipulated in a very basic random way without complicated programming."

Next, Goldman and others are ready to use the simple sensing and moving functions of particle robots to design more complex interactions. “Engineers have always been interested in building group robots. Particle robots can be reconfigured to meet specific needs,” he said. Researchers predict that a group robotic system of particle robots can be used to enhance small units in the city, Situational awareness and commanding capabilities in environments such as forests, caves or other rugged terrain.
