Shanghai to use disposable acupuncture needles from December 1st
The Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau officially announced on the 19th that effective December 1st, all medical institutions across the city will be required to use only disposable sterile acupuncture needles during treatment sessions. This new regulation aims to prevent cross-infection among patients, especially to reduce the risk of blood-borne diseases and ensure a safer environment for acupuncture procedures.
According to Ji Weiping, director of the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine under the Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau, the implementation of this policy marks a significant step in improving hygiene standards in TCM practices. Starting from December 1st, all medical facilities must stop using non-disposable acupuncture needles. The cost for each acupuncture session will increase by approximately 2 to 3 yuan, but this additional fee will be fully covered by health insurance, ensuring no extra burden on patients.
Ji also emphasized that the proper disposal of used disposable needles will strictly follow the "Shanghai Medical Waste Sanitary Management Regulations." All used needles will be collected and disposed of in a centralized and safe manner to avoid environmental contamination or public health risks.
Reports from several hospitals, including Shuguang Hospital, Yueyang Hospital, and the affiliated hospitals of the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, indicate that preparations have already been completed. Medical staff have undergone training to ensure smooth implementation of the new protocol. Initially, all acupuncture treatments will be conducted using the newly mandated disposable needles.
This move reflects the city's ongoing efforts to modernize traditional medical practices while maintaining high safety and hygiene standards. It also highlights the government’s commitment to protecting both patients and healthcare workers through stricter regulations and better oversight of medical procedures.
