Raytheon Canada develops next-generation HF radar
According to China National Defense Science and Technology News, Raytheon Canada Ltd. has obtained a technical demonstration project contract from the Canadian Defense Research and Development Department (DRDC) to develop the next generation of high frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR). In 2012, Raytheon will install a system and conduct a demonstration in Hartren, Nova Scotia.
Raytheon Canada's general manager Brian Smith said, "We believe this technology will provide continuous and active monitoring of Canada's 370 km (200 nautical miles) Economic Zone (EEZ). HFSWR is one of the most important new technologies. It can be used to protect our fisheries and marine environment and provide ice flow monitoring in the Arctic and East Coast."
The HFSWR radar is an over-the-horizon sensor that can be used to detect and track vessel traffic within the 370 km exclusive economic zone. This technology has been developed for more than 20 years and has received strong support from DRDC. Internationally, Raytheon Canada has operated similar systems in the Black Sea and the Indian Ocean. Raytheon's HFSWR has been proven in all operating environments and sea conditions and is a fully exportable technology.
